Maury Castaneda – Varsity Head Coach

Castaneda enters his 5th season at the helm of the Yuba City High School varsity program, marking his 8th year overall with the Honkers baseball program. Under his leadership, Yuba City has once again established itself as one of northern California's premier high school baseball powerhouses.

Coach Castaneda spearheaded a historic 2025 championship season, guiding the Honkers to a 31-5 record—the most wins in the entire state of California. The 2025 squad finished the season ranked #1 in Division III, #1 in the Sacramento area, & #9 overall in the MaxPreps State of California rankings. That storybook campaign included a Foothill Valley League Championship, a dramatic 8-7 nine-inning comeback victory over Central Catholic (Modesto) for the 2025 CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division 3 Championship, and a victory over Saint Francis (Mountain View) to claim the 2025 CIF NorCal Division II State Championship.

Castaneda’s emphasis on player development has produced two Foothill Valley League MVPs and propelled numerous student-athletes to the collegiate level, including NCAA Division I & II. His program also emphasizes high standards off the field: for four consecutive seasons, Castaneda’s teams have earned the prestigious American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Team Academic Excellence Award for maintaining a cumulative team GPA over 3.0.
